French matting came into being when
the only matboards available were white, off-white, and cream. Lines and panels
placed near the opening in the mat brought your eye more quickly into the art.
French mats are still highly prized on old engravings, botanicals, and
watercolors. A French mat can be a single inked line to an elaborate series of
lines and panels that echo the proportion and colors found in the art or frame
selected.
