These frames can also be 12 karat
white gold or metal leaf in either gold or silver. Finished corner frames are
still made the old world way and are highly labor intensive. Raw wood is cut
and joined to create the desired profile and size. It can then be carved in
elaborate motifs or left as is. Gesso is then applied in layers until the
corner mitre disappears. A color ground is used next to create a tonal effect
on any leaf that is applied. Gilding liquor is then applied which adheres the
leaf to the molding. Part or all of the surface may be burnished down giving it
that bright gold sheen. The frame is finished at this point unless an antique
effect is desired to tone down the gloss or bring carving into greater relief.
These beautiful frames compliment any style of artwork.
